    SYSTEMS THEORY

Systems Thinking is a method for understanding the whole, rather than the different parts. It focuses on relationships. For example, a liver, a heart or lungs do not make up a human body. These parts would not function on their own. They can only function in relationship with each other, forming the whole which is the human body. The human body cannot live on its own either as it needs a relationship with the environment to be able to function. Many trees and their relationships with every organism connected to them make up a forest. An organisation such as a business is a social system of communication. It can be sustainable only when it functions within the natural boundaries of functionality, meaning it can only function successfully as a whole in relation with the environment. Systems Theory is the science of interdependent, interrelated and interconnected relationships.

What is a system
‘Feedback is a method of controlling a system by re-inserting into it the results of its past performance. We then have a process we may call learning.’ (Norbert Wiener)
